Policy Advocacy: Promoting Ethical Practices in Healthcare
At Vaaradhi Generics, our mission goes beyond improving access to affordable medicines. We are equally committed to addressing the systemic issues that make healthcare expensive and, at times, inaccessible.
Through our parent organization, Vaaradhi Trust, we are actively engaged in policy advocacy to promote transparency, accountability, and patient-first practices in India’s healthcare system.
Our Engagement at the Supreme Court of India
Vaaradhi Trust has filed an intervention application before the Supreme Court of India in an ongoing public interest matter concerning the regulation of pharmaceutical marketing practices .
This case addresses a critical issue in the healthcare ecosystem:
👉 The need for stronger oversight and enforcement of ethical marketing practices by pharmaceutical companies.
The matter currently before the Hon’ble Supreme Court focuses on:
- The Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP)
- Whether it should remain voluntary or be made legally enforceable
- The need for a robust regulatory framework to monitor pharmaceutical marketing
The petition highlights concerns that:
- Unregulated marketing practices may influence prescribing behavior
- Patients are often not informed about lower-cost alternatives
- Transparency and accountability mechanisms need strengthening
Why Vaaradhi Trust Intervened
As an organization working closely with communities, Vaaradhi Trust brings ground-level insights into how these systemic issues affect everyday patients.
Our intervention is driven by:
- Direct interaction with patients facing high medicine costs
- Observations of limited awareness around generic alternatives
- The need to ensure fair and informed healthcare choices
The Trust aims to assist the Court by providing practical, on-ground perspectives that can support meaningful policy outcomes .
What We Are Advocating For
Through this intervention, we support:
1. Stronger Regulation: Making ethical marketing practices mandatory and enforceable, not voluntary.
2. Transparency in Prescriptions: Encouraging systems where patients are aware of all available options, including generics.
3. Accountability Mechanisms: Clear monitoring and consequences for unethical practices.
4. Promotion of Generic Medicines: Creating an ecosystem where affordable alternatives are actively encouraged.
Our Broader Vision
This legal engagement is part of a larger mission to:
- Reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses
- Improve access to affordable medicines
- Build trust in generic alternatives
- Create a more equitable healthcare system
Beyond the Courtroom
Policy advocacy is just one part of our approach.
We combine:
- On-ground awareness programs
- Accessible solutions like WhatsApp-based ordering
- Educational initiatives
to ensure that change is both systemic and practical.
A Step Toward Systemic Change
Healthcare affordability cannot be solved by access alone, it requires structural reform.
Our involvement in this case reflects our belief that:
👉 Patients deserve a system that is transparent, ethical, and built around their well-being.
Moving Forward
We remain committed to:
- Supporting policy reforms
- Advocating for patient rights
- Building bridges between awareness, access, and accountability
Because true impact happens when systems change, not just choices.
